As an off-shoot of my technical writing career, I am often hired to perform other consulting duties for my clients. My deliverables are generally detailed documents (reports, spreadsheets, or proposals) that will assist a business manager or team in promoting the efficacy and quality of their operations, either on a per-project basis or for the benefit of an organization overall.
My business writing and consulting tasks include the following:
Requirements gathering for internal or external projects
Business analysis, including cost/benefit analysis and reporting
Process engineering
Process mapping and detailed integration analysis
Staffing proposals and team structure change proposals
Efficiency gains proposals
Project management support
What makes me a successful contributor in these duties are the same skills that make me a successful writer: timeliness, diplomacy, an ability to manage project constraints, ongoing risk mitigation, and effective written communication.
